Get application-ready once. Apply everywhere.

We analyzed all 561 listings in this directory for what applications actually ask for. The pattern: almost every one assumes the same short stack of basics, then screens on a few numbers. Collect the stack below once and most applications become a fit question, not a paperwork scramble.

From the data: 69% of the 157 grants here are New Jersey-specific, 22% screen by employee count, and 13% by revenue. The basics below are assumed so universally that most listings do not even mention them.

The core four are done. For most programs in this directory, you are now down to eligibility fit, not missing paperwork. Open the directory and filter to what fits.

The core four

Nearly every application assumes these exist before you start. Get them once, in this order; every one is free.

Your LLC or corporation, registered with the State of New Jersey. The state filing fee for an LLC is $100. Everything else on this page hangs off this.

Free directly from the IRS in minutes; never pay a third party for it. Banks, payroll, and nearly every application want this number. Only 5 listings bother to spell it out because everyone assumes you have it.

Register for NJ taxes (Form NJ-REG, due within 60 days of forming) and you get your BRC. No BRC means no state grants, no state contracts, no NJEDA anything.

NJEDA will not release approved funds without a Tax Clearance Certificate, and 21 listings screen on tax standing. If your filings are current, the certificate takes minutes on the PBS portal.

Know your numbers

Applications screen with these. You do not need documents yet; you need the answers memorized.

Full-time and part-time W-2 count. Many programs cap eligibility (for example, under 25 full-time employees); some award more per employee.

Last year's gross receipts. Programs use it as a ceiling, a floor, or a sizing tool; you will type this number constantly.

The multipliers

Not required to start, but each one unlocks a distinct slice of the directory.

Where the numbers come from: we pattern-matched the eligibility rules, application steps, and fine print of all 561 listings in this directory (last run July 21, 2026). Counts are how many listings explicitly mention each item; the core four are assumed by far more applications than ever say so. As always, confirm current requirements with each program.
